Study in Texture III, 2023
Upcycled textiles, texture paste, gesso, and high-gloss industrial polymer on canvas
Dimensions irregular; outer boundaries and profile thickness vary due to material protrusions beyond the canvas support
Private Collection
Developed as standalone studies during university practice, this triptych records the initial studio shift away from flat pictorial planes toward heavy tactile distortion. The series emerged from a desire to push the canvas into a three-dimensional, sculptural space, utilising upcycled textiles manipulated to deliberately extend past the perimeter of the physical frame. By freezing the cloth into a permanent, monochromatic relief, the work strips away the material's previous history to isolate pure form. Acquired together as a unified group, these pieces document the definitive structural experiments that directly inform the complex, heavily textured surfaces of the contemporary portfolio.
